THE PERFECT END
European & Dutch Champion Long Distance 2017 and 2019 worldrecord:17 (Seventeen!) times Sub 9 hours
The 2nd weekend of september 2020 would have been the perfect end to my 20 year successful career.
But you know how it works, you can't plan everything in advance, it often turns out differently.
In 2018 I informed my sponsors that I would finish my career at the ITU World Championships in my own
country in 2020, at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam
So this 2nd weekend of september I would have said goodbye, the perfect ending.
In 2019 the focus was on short and half distance races and no long distance on Vonsy's race calendar.
Suddenly things turned out differently and I decided to do my last long distance at the European and
Dutch championship Challenge Almere 2019.
That it really turned out to be my last race, again... the perfect ending.
I couldn't wish for a better end of my career, it was a real Vonsy race, strong, fast, again a great victory,
again European & Dutch champion, again under 9 hours and most importantly, many of my most important
people in my life were LIVE there and it was a great farewell!
I think the victory goes in to my books as the most emotional victory and I will never forget the whole race.
At the finish line I did throw my beloved Hoka One One shoes in the audience .. apparently already
suspecting that Corona is coming and Challenge Almere, where EVERYTHING started for
Yvonne van Vlerken, the long-distance triathlete, would really be her last time swimming, cycling and running .....
Enjoying the sport that I love most, for the last time, one more time to be carried to the finish like a queen,
just the perfect end to my sporting career.
My gratitude for the best farewell an athlete can wish for is immensely great. 20 years of success and just truly amazing what this sport has
given me and still does.I say THANK YOU to each and every one of you who was part of this wonderful journey and I say goodbye and see
you around at one or the other race, this time not on the course but on the side.
Perfectly fitting to this weekend and where it would have ended, my path as a professional athlete is over.
THE PERFECT END
